WEFE Nexus

The WEFE Nexus is a holistic approach to achieve all the SDGs. The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus is an approach that describes and addresses the complex and interrelated nature of the global resource systems, on which we depend to achieve different social, economic, and environmental goals. It is used as a framework that captures the interrelationships, synergies, and trade-offs between resources for water, energy, and food, while protecting our ecosystems; allowing for more sustainable and integrated solutions to achieve a climate secure world.

SDC works towards the following aims in the field of Water for Food (Agriculture)

  • Increasing access to agricultural water productivity and efficiency by providing access to low-cost and efficient techniques (e.g. drip and sprinkler irrigation) and by up-scaling such approaches through sustainable business models.
  • Increased access to funding for smallholders for productive water use systems through the support of microfinance institutions.
  • Increasing access to improved agricultural water management through building/ rehabilitation of irrigation schemes, taking into account various issues such as energy, land, training of farmers.
  • Mainstreaming of state-of-the-art agricultural water management for both rain-fed and irrigated agriculture in national and international policy processes (CAADP).
  • Increasing recovery & reuse through the support of entrepreneurs to adopt viable business models to reuse wastewater, grey water and excreta
